LONGER BIO

Jason Quick is an accomplished guitarist, composer, bandleader, producer and educator based out of Toledo, Ohio.  Quick’s namesake Trios and Quartets have been featured at venues, clubs, events, and festivals across the Great Lakes and Midwest regions.  Specializing in original jazz material in addition to standards, recent group performances include Jazz Tuesday’s at Moriarty’s Pub in Lansing, Sunset Jazz Festival in Grand Rapids, Ohio, 577 Foundation in Perrysburg, Lucille’s Jazz Lounge in Toledo, the Peacock Café, Crosby Festival of the Arts, Hillside Winery in Gilboa, OH.  Quick has also performed his music at Cliff Bell’s in Detroit, Ginger Rabbit in Columbus, Treelawn Social Club in Cleveland, Ziggy’s in Yspilanti.  Quick Trio has also held monthly residencies in such Toledo venues as Brewhouse Downtown, Wesley’s Bar, Ye Olde Durty Bird, and Manhattan’s.  Quick has a Master’s degree in guitar performance from Bowling Green State University and a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies from Wayne State University.  He lives in Toledo with his wife, Sarah and their two dogs, Slide and Echo.

Quick was originally inspired to study and play jazz music after his father took him when he was still a teenager, to a club in his hometown of Livonia to hear alto saxophonist, Larry Nozero.  Also, during that time, he attended a clinic and performance given by Marcus Belgrave and George Benson which further inspired him to pursue a life in music.  Quick has a degree in Jazz Studies from Wayne State University where he studied with Steven Carryer, Matt Michaels and Chris Collins, and a Master’s in Guitar Performance from Bowling Green State University where he studied with Chris Buzzelli, Dr. Donald Wilson and Dr. Wallace Depue.  Along with consistent practice and study in music, guitar playing and composition, Quick has attended the 2019 Walden Creative Musicians Retreat in Dublin, New Hampshire with George Lewis as the composer in residence.  He has also attended, for the past 4 years, the Alternative Guitar Summit Camp, which is an immersive experience in jazz guitar and improvisation.  Guest artists and faculty include Kurt Rosenwinkle, Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Mike Stern, and Mary Halverson.

In addition to the improvisational arts, Jason remains active solo and in group as singer and guitarist covering songwriter artists of a variety in modern americana, rock, blues and the old-time/new blood folksong forms.  You can hear him every month playing solo at his longtime anchor to the Toledo music scene, Manhattan’s on Adams street.

Jason also is active in the summertime as a lead electric guitar with his longtime musical cohort, Jeff Tucker in the Jeff Tucker Band, whom, together with bassist/vocalist Larry Smirin and drummer Stephen Klunk, played venues in Catawba Island, Charlevoix, Petosky, Cleveland and elsewhere in the summer of 2022.

Jason also has a passion for composing classical concert music.  In the summer of 2019, he had a premier of his string quartet, “Tangerine Strings” by members of the Toledo Symphony during the 4(19) String Quartet Festival.  Although he currently does not have a piece of his about to be performed, he hopes to make that happen sometime soon.

Jason also heads up a rock band that plays original material called Quickness.  The most recent recording release is from 2015.

Jason began playing guitar at age 12. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Wayne State University, while also playing out around Detroit. Jason went on to receive his master’s in music in Guitar Performance from Bowling Green State University. For over 30 years, Jason has studied his instrument and played out and jammed wherever possible. In between gigs, Jason has taught guitar and musicology, both as an adjunct professor and as a private instructor.

Alumni of the Walden Creative Musicians Retreat. Also has attended the Alternative Guitar Summit Camp.

The philosophy behind Quick’s performing and composing is his desire to keep moving ahead, developing his craft, connecting, and engaging with musicians, all while pursuing the path of creative exploration and presentation.
